Benalmádena without a car: Arroyo de la Miel, cable car, beaches
Getting around Benalmádena without a car: why to stay in Arroyo de la Miel, the C-1 train, cable car, Puerto Marina, Tivoli status and a beach table.
Nordik Team · Updated onTo enjoy Benalmádena without a car, stay in Arroyo de la Miel: you have the Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel commuter train station (line C-1, about 25 minutes to Malaga and 15–20 to the airport), the cable car a few minutes' walk away and a direct way down to Benalmádena Costa and Puerto Marina. The beaches, the marina and the whitewashed village are easy to combine by train, city bus and on foot. You do not need to hire a car for a break of several days.
At Nordik we manage apartments in Arroyo de la Miel and Benalmádena Costa, and this is the guide we would give a friend coming for the first time.
Benalmádena has three parts: which one suits you
The first thing that confuses newcomers is that "Benalmádena" is actually three separate areas:
- Arroyo de la Miel: the town and shopping centre, where most people live. It has the train station, supermarkets, traditional bars and pubs. It is the most practical without a car.
- Benalmádena Costa: the strip along the sea, with beaches, hotels, the promenade and Puerto Marina. More touristy, with more nightlife.
- Benalmádena Pueblo: the original whitewashed village on the mountainside. Lovely for an afternoon, but far from the beach and the train; you will rely on the bus.
| Area | C-1 train | Beach | Vibe | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arroyo de la Miel | Own station (Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel) | 15–25 min walk downhill | Local, shopping | Getting around without a car, long stays |
| Benalmádena Costa | Torremuelle or Arroyo de la Miel (uphill) | Beachfront | Touristy, nightlife at the marina | Beach and promenade |
| Benalmádena Pueblo | No; city bus | Far | Quiet, whitewashed village | An afternoon visit |
Getting to Benalmádena without a car
The C-1 commuter train: your best friend
Line C-1 (Málaga Centro-Alameda – Airport – Fuengirola) stops at Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel, on Avenida de la Estación. It also has stops at Torremuelle and Carvajal, on the western side of the municipality.
- From the airport: towards Fuengirola, via Torremolinos; about 15–20 minutes.
- From Málaga Centro-Alameda or María Zambrano: about 25 minutes.
- Frequency: roughly every 20 minutes during the day, from early morning (around 5:30) until after 23:30.
- Price: a single ticket from the airport costs around €1.80 (2 zones). Fares and passes change, so check beforehand on renfe.com.
If your flight lands late, after the last train, a taxi is the option; expect roughly €25–30 to Arroyo de la Miel. At Nordik the time does not matter: check-in is keyless and you have WhatsApp support. More tips in Malaga airport to city centre.
Bus
To go up to the Pueblo or move between the coast and Arroyo there is Benalmádena's city bus. For Malaga there are also intercity buses run by the Consorcio de Transporte Metropolitano (for example, the M-110 between Malaga and Benalmádena Costa), handy if you are on the seafront and do not want to walk up to the station. Check current routes and timetables with the Consorcio before you set off.
Things to do in Benalmádena without a car
Benalmádena cable car up Mount Calamorro
It leaves from the Tívoli esplanade, a few minutes' walk from Arroyo de la Miel station. The ride up takes about 15 minutes and reaches the top of Calamorro, at almost 800 m, with views over the whole bay from Malaga to Fuengirola and, on very clear days, the African coast. At the top there are short trails and a birds-of-prey display.
- Approximate price: from about €13 return for adults when booked online; more at the ticket office.
- Approximate opening hours: in October from 11:00 to 18:00; in November and December until 17:00; in July and August until 23:00.
- Heads up: it closes in strong winds. If you see the cabins stopped, check its website or social media before walking up to the esplanade.
Tivoli World: what is happening in 2026
Many guests ask us about Tivoli, Arroyo de la Miel's historic amusement park. It has been closed since 2020 and is being redeveloped; public reports point to a reopening no earlier than 2028–2029. As of today (October 2026) it is not something to plan your trip around, although the cable car, which leaves right next to it, runs as normal.
Puerto Marina
Benalmádena's marina is one of the most photographed on the Costa del Sol thanks to its fantastical buildings over the water. By day it is a relaxed stroll among boats, shops and terraces; at night, from 22:00, it livens up with bars and clubs. Excursion boats leave from the port, some offering dolphin watching, and the Sea Life aquarium is here too. From Arroyo de la Miel it is a 25–30 minute walk downhill or a city bus ride.
Benalmádena Pueblo and the Stupa
White streets, Plaza de España and the viewpoint by the church of Santo Domingo. Higher up is the Enlightenment Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist monuments in Europe, with tremendous views and free entry to the outdoor grounds. Take the city bus; walking up from the coast is a tough climb.
Parque de la Paloma
Between Arroyo de la Miel and the coast, a large park with a lake, ducks, rabbits and play areas. Free and perfect if you are travelling with children or want to walk in the shade.
Benalmádena beaches

| Bil-Bil | 600 m | Urban, opposite Castillo Bil-Bil | Benalmádena Costa promenade |
| Torrebermeja | 800 m | Semi-natural, quiet | Promenade or coastal bus |

A 2-day car-free plan for Benalmádena
Day 1: mountain and marina
- In the morning, the cable car from the Tívoli esplanade. Go up early, when visibility is usually better and queues are shorter.
- Lunch in Arroyo de la Miel, where local bars serve a menú del día (set lunch) at a reasonable price.
- Afternoon at Parque de la Paloma, then walk down to the coast.
- Sunset and dinner at Puerto Marina.
Day 2: village and beach
- City bus to the Pueblo and the Stupa in the morning, before the heat kicks in.
- Back to the coast for the beach at Santa Ana or Bil-Bil.
- If you have time left, take the train to Fuengirola or Torremolinos for a change of promenade.
With this plan you never need a car, and if you stay longer, Malaga city is about 25 minutes by train for a day of museums and tapas.

Practical tips from our team
- Arroyo is up the hill and the coast is down below. Going down to the beach is a stroll; coming back up in the heat, with shopping or children, is better by bus or taxi.
- Shop in Arroyo de la Miel: there are more supermarkets and more normal prices than on the seafront.
- Combine it with Torremolinos: it is one stop and a few minutes away by train; we cover it in our Torremolinos guide.
- Out of season (October to March) the cable car has shorter hours and some marina venues close on weekdays, but the weather is usually good for walking.

FAQ
Can you visit Benalmádena without a car?
Yes, easily. The C-1 commuter train has stations at Arroyo de la Miel, Torremuelle and Carvajal, and connects with the airport, Torremolinos, Malaga and Fuengirola. The cable car is a few minutes' walk from the station, and the coast and Puerto Marina can be reached by walking downhill or by city bus. Only the Pueblo requires a bus up the hill.
Which train station should I use for Benalmádena?
The main station is Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel, on Malaga's C-1 commuter line. It is the closest to the cable car, Parque de la Paloma and the Arroyo shopping area. For the western beaches, such as Carvajal, get off at Carvajal or Torremuelle, also on the C-1.
Is Tivoli World open in 2026?
No. Tivoli World in Arroyo de la Miel has been closed since 2020 and is being redeveloped, with public reports pointing to a reopening no earlier than 2028–2029. The Benalmádena cable car, which leaves from the esplanade next to the former park, does run as normal except on very windy days.
Is it better to stay in Arroyo de la Miel or Benalmádena Costa?
Arroyo de la Miel is more practical if you will travel by train to Malaga, the airport or Fuengirola, and it usually has better prices and more supermarkets. Benalmádena Costa puts the beach and promenade on your doorstep, but the station is uphill. For long stays or remote work, Arroyo usually wins.
How much does the Benalmádena cable car cost?
As a guide, an adult return ticket starts at around €13 when booked online and costs more at the ticket office. Opening hours vary a lot by month: in October it usually opens from 11:00 to 18:00 and in summer until late at night. It closes in strong winds, so check its website on the day.
