Private room or apartment in Malaga: which should you book?

Private room or apartment in Malaga? If you're travelling solo or as a couple, want a good price and don't mind sharing a kitchen and bathroom, a Nordik Rooms room (with its own lock and, in most houses, a desk) is the most practical choice. If you're travelling as a family or group, want complete independence or will be working remotely with calls at any hour, go for a full Nordik apartment.

At Nordik we run both formats in Malaga city and on the Costa del Sol, and every week we help guests decide. This comparison explains the real differences, who each option is for and which neighbourhoods you'll find them in.

What a Nordik Rooms room is

Nordik Rooms are houses with several private rooms, each with its own door and keypad lock. Your room is yours alone: you sleep, keep your things and work there. The kitchen and bathrooms are shared with the other guests in the house, just like a well-run shared flat, but with cleaning included and 24/7 support.

What day-to-day life is like

  • Privacy: your room stays locked with your code even if you're out all day.
  • Shared kitchen: equipped for cooking, with space for your food in the fridge.
  • Shared bathrooms: split between the rooms in the house.
  • Desk: most houses have one in the room, which is rare for a room rented by the night.
  • Clear house rules: quiet at night, clean up after yourself, respect other people's space.

Where Nordik rooms are

We have room houses in Malaga city centre (the Helsinki and Estocolmo houses), in La Trinidad (Mariehamn, Stavanger and Copenhague), in Segalerva (Geiranger), in Torremolinos (Undredal) and in Chilches, Vélez-Málaga (Kabelvåg). For example, the Helsinki Køge room in the centre puts you a short walk from Calle Larios; Mariehamn Ystad in La Trinidad has a desk and is an easy stroll to the centre across the river; and Undredal Farum in Torremolinos is a good base if you're after the beach.

What a Nordik apartment is

A Nordik apartment is an entire home for you and your group: bedrooms, living room, kitchen and bathroom of your own, with nothing shared. Entry is keyless here too, with a keypad on the door, and you get the same services included: cleaning before arrival, bed linen, towels, wifi and WhatsApp support.

Sizes and areas

We have apartments sleeping from 2 to 6 in Pedregalejo, the city centre, La Trinidad, La Malagueta, east Malaga, Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Torrox Costa. For a couple or a traveller who wants their own space, try Reine in Pedregalejo, which sleeps three and has a desk. For a big group or family, Moskenes in Bellavista sleeps six.

Still not sure about the area? We can help in where to stay in Malaga.

Who each option is for

Book a private room if…

  • You're travelling solo and want to pay less than for a whole apartment.
  • You're in Malaga for work, an internship, a course or a study stay of a few weeks.
  • You're out all day and the house is mainly for sleeping, showering and cooking something simple.
  • You like having other travellers around without having to socialise.
  • You need a desk to work a few hours on your laptop.

Book an apartment if…

  • You're travelling as a family or group: per person it usually works out the same or cheaper than several rooms.
  • You're travelling with children and want your own bathroom and kitchen at any hour.
  • You want privacy as a couple or a quiet getaway.
  • You work remotely with frequent video calls or on a different time zone from Spain.
  • You cook a lot or follow a specific diet and prefer your own kitchen.
  • You're staying a month or longer and want to feel at home.

Private room or apartment for remote work in Malaga

Both options work for remote work, just differently. A room with a desk gives you a closed, quiet space to focus, ideal if you work on a laptop and take the odd call. If you have long meetings every day or work on another country's hours, an apartment means you don't have to worry about noise from the shared kitchen or disturbing other guests early in the morning. To choose an area, see our guide to the best Malaga neighbourhoods for remote work.

Long stays: a month in Malaga

For a month or more, the choice usually comes down to budget and how much you value your own space. A private room lets you live in the centre or La Trinidad for a lot less than an apartment in the same area. An apartment gives you complete independence and the option to have visitors. Either way, ask us on WhatsApp about mid-stay cleans and linen changes. We cover it all in living in Malaga for a month as a digital nomad.

Three travellers, three choices

Laura, three weeks of training in the centre

She's travelling alone, spends the day in class and wants to go out in the evening. She doesn't need a living room or her own kitchen, but she does want a quiet place to study and a desk. A private room in the centre or La Trinidad lets her walk everywhere while paying a lot less than for an apartment.

Marc and Ana, ten days of remote work by the sea

They both work, with calls at different times. Sharing a kitchen with other guests during meetings would make their days harder. An apartment with a desk in Pedregalejo or east Malaga gives them room to spread out and a seafront promenade for when they log off.

A family of five in summer

With children, independence comes first: your own bathroom, a kitchen for breakfasts and dinners, and your own schedule. A five- or six-person apartment works out better value than several rooms and means you don't have to worry about disturbing anyone.

What's the same with both options

  • 24-hour keyless entry with your code or Nordikey, no reception and no late check-in fees.
  • Online guest registration before arrival, mandatory in Spain.
  • Cleaning included, plus bed linen, towels and wifi.
  • 24/7 WhatsApp support throughout your stay.
  • Direct booking at nordikcompany.com at the best available price, plus access to Nordik Tribe, our free guest club with perks.

Common questions when choosing

Are the rooms suitable for two people?

It depends on the room. Some are designed for one person and others take a couple. Each listing shows the number of guests and bed type.

Is a room house noisy?

The houses have quiet-hours rules, and guests tend to be business travellers, students or people who are out all day. It's not a party hostel. If you're a light sleeper, earplugs never hurt, as in any city-centre building.

Can I switch from a room to an apartment if my plans change?

Message us on WhatsApp: depending on availability and dates, we'll find the option that fits best.

FAQ

Which is cheaper in Malaga, a room or an apartment?

If you're travelling solo, a private room is usually cheaper than an entire apartment in the same area, because you share the kitchen and bathroom. If there are three or more of you, an apartment often costs the same or less per person than booking several rooms. Always compare the total price with cleaning included, not just the nightly rate.

Is it safe to stay in a shared house in Malaga?

In a Nordik Rooms private room, your door has its own lock with a personal code that only works during your stay, so your belongings are secure when you go out. The shared areas are the kitchen and bathrooms. On top of that, every guest completes Spain's mandatory guest registration and there's 24/7 WhatsApp support.

Can I cook if I book a private room?

Yes. Nordik Rooms houses have a shared, fully equipped kitchen with a hob, fridge, cookware and crockery, so you can make your own meals. Simple house rules apply: clean up after yourself, don't take over the fridge and respect quiet hours. For a month-long stay it's a great way to save a lot on food.

Room or apartment for a month in Malaga?

If you're travelling solo on a tighter budget, a room with a desk lets you live in a great location for less. If you work remotely with lots of video calls, travel as a couple or want to have visitors, an apartment is worth it for the independence. Either way, ask about mid-stay cleans and linen changes.

Do Nordik rooms have a private bathroom?

No: in Nordik Rooms the room is private, with its own lock and, in most houses, a desk, but the bathrooms and kitchen are shared with the other guests in the house. If your own bathroom is a must, a full Nordik apartment is the right choice, available from two guests.
