Getting around Málaga without a car: walking, bus, metro and train
You don’t need a car in Málaga: the centre is walkable, EMT buses and the metro cover the city, and the Cercanías train takes you to the airport and the coast.
Nordik Team · Updated onTo get around Málaga without a car, walking, the city bus (EMT) and the Cercanías train are all you need. The old town, Soho, La Malagueta and the port are 10–20 minutes apart on foot; buses go to Pedregalejo, El Palo and Teatinos, and line C1 of the Cercanías reaches the airport, Torremolinos and Benalmádena.
Most Nordik guests never rent a car. Here is which option to use for each trip, roughly what it costs and a few locals’ tips.

Walking: the best way to see the centre
Calle Larios, the Cathedral, the Picasso Museum, the port and La Malagueta are a few minutes from each other. Central streets are pedestrian and flat; only the climb to Gibralfaro and the Alcazaba is steep. In summer, walk early or after 19:00.
City bus (EMT)
EMT buses link the centre with every neighbourhood. Lines from the Alameda Principal take about 20–25 minutes to the beaches of Pedregalejo and El Palo. You can pay by contactless card on board; if you ride a lot, the Consorcio transport card is cheaper per trip.
Metro and Cercanías
The metro reaches the centre (Atarazanas and Guadalmedina) and is handy for Teatinos and the university. The C1 Cercanías train leaves from María Zambrano and Centro-Alameda and reaches the airport in about 12 minutes; the same line continues to Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola.
Taxis and ride-hailing
There are taxi ranks at the Alameda, Plaza de la Marina and the stations. Airport to centre costs roughly €25–30. Ride-hailing apps also work in the city.

How do I get from the airport to the centre without a car?

Can I pay for the bus by card?
Yes, EMT buses accept contactless bank cards. If you make many trips, the Consorcio transport card is cheaper per ride.
How do I get to the beach from the centre?
La Malagueta is about 10 minutes on foot. For Pedregalejo and El Palo, take an EMT bus from the Alameda Principal: about 20–25 minutes.
Is there night transport?
